Best Cat Food Bowls

best cat food bowls

If you’re a cat parent, you may be asking “what are the best cat food bowls?” In this post you’ll discover everything you need to know about food bowls including ten of the best on offer at this time.

Whether you have a new kitten or a senior cat you’ll find plenty of ideas to inspire you. Your choice of food bowl is actually quite important as you’ll discover in this post.

Why you should avoid plastic

If you walk along the pet aisle of most supermarkets you’ll find plenty of plastic food bowls. However, those brightly colored bowls can easily become scratched.

Unless cleaned meticulously they can become a breeding ground for bacteria. As a result your feline friend could develop cat acne.

Though you may not intentionally feed your cat from a dirty bowl, bacteria harboring in cracks could easily cause this condition. You’d be able to notice it by the appearance of tiny black dots on your cat’s chin.

In addition, many plastic bowls contain toxic chemicals. Some of these have been found to cause damage in main organs such as kidneys and liver.

It’s not just our pets at risk from plastic food bowls and containers but humans as well. Always look for products that don’t contain BPA.

What’s the safest material?

The safest and best cat food bowls are made from ceramic or stainless steel. This is because not only are they dishwasher safe, but tough and durable as well.

However, if your cat’s food bowl does develop a crack or gets chipped, discard it. You wouldn’t eat off a cracked plate so don’t expect your precious feline to either.

Why shape and size is important

It’s a cat’s natural instinct to be on the alert while feeding. This goes back to their wild cat ancestors who were prey to large mammals.

This means your cat would feel more comfortable eating from a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one. Being able to see their surroundings while feeding is important to a cat.

Where to locate your cat food bowl

Place your cat’s bowls somewhere she won’t be disturbed. This means not in the middle of a busy area where family members are walking past.

Also, never place food or water bowls next to the litter box. I’m sure you wouldn’t like to eat your meals next to the toilet, and neither would your cat.

If you have several cats avoid placing their food bowls close together. This is because it could cause conflict. Cats hunt alone, not in packs and may get irritated.

In addition, try to keep food bowls in the same place. Cats are creatures of habit and can get stressed with changes to their environment.

The following cat food bowls are based on my own opinions and customer ratings. I may make a small commission on any sales made but this in no way reflects the price you pay

Slow Feeder Cat Bowl – Interactive Food & Treat Puzzle Feeder

Slow Feeder Cat Bowl

Puzzle feeders encourage your cat to work for her food. In the wild, cats are used to hunting and working out how to catch prey. They’re excellent problem solvers and can get lazy and bored without a challenge.

Slow feeder cat bowl is a maze in which you place kibbles or treats. Your cat has to work out how to get food out of the maze.

This can provide hours of fun and entertainment for your feline friend. Also, as the food maze is quite large it’s suitable for several cats.

This is good news if you have a growing feline family! Although cats are very territorial they’re often ok about sharing toys. This means you should have no problem with your furry friends sharing the food maze.

As the maze is made from food grade ABS plastic, it’s safe for your pets. Though most plastic contains harmful chemicals ABS is non-toxic

Silicone pads underneath the feeder stop it sliding around. This could be an issue otherwise, especially with several cats eager to pull food out of the maze!

You’re advised not to provide other food while your cat is using the puzzle feeder. This is to keep an eye on portion control.

In conclusion

As you’ve discovered they’re are many different types of food bowls for pets. Most plastic bowls can soon become breeding grounds for germs if scratched. In addition, they often contain some very undesirable chemicals.

Ceramic and stainless steel bowls are much better. This is because they’re less likely to get damaged and don’t contain harmful chemicals.

The angle at which your cat eats is also something to take into consideration. Most cat parents simply place food bowls on the floor.

This is totally fine, but raised bowls provide a better eating position for your cat. This is because there’s no strain on the spine which can contribute towards neck and back problems.

If you have a busy lifestyle you could always consider an automatic cat feeder. It could also save you from being woken up during the night by your furry friend!

Pet food mats are excellent at keeping your cat’s feeding area tidy, and most are waterproof and easy to clean.

I hope you’ve been inspired by my collection of some of the best cat food bowls, and that you understand a bit more about them.

  1. Great article! You left some really great tips. I figured stainless steel or ceramic were the best choices but I had no idea of the elevated tilted bowls. I think these are genius! I haven’t seen this at my local big box stores before. Thanks for shining a spotlight on these. I also enjoyed the tips about leaving food in multiple spots if you have multiple cats. Makes total sense! Thanks for pointing this out.
Thanks again for a great post.

    1. Hi Jamie, thank you for comment and glad you enjoyed this post:) Yes, elevated bowls that tilt are a great idea. It’s not uncommon for cats to regurgitate food every now and again, and this could in some cases be down to posture. Stainless steel and ceramic cat food bowls are certainly a good choice as they’re easier to keep clean with less chance of bacteria building up. Thanks for stopping by:)

  2. Hi Kathy,
We just got a cat and named him Coco. He is sooooooo cute. Thankfully I came across this article on food and water bowls. I learned a great deal from reading what you have written. Thank u.
I am looking for a suitable cat cave, and I hope to get to buy one soon.
    Regards,
    Aps

    1. Hi Aparna, lovely to hear you’ve got a new cat and hope Coco brings you lots of pleasure:) Glad you enjoyed this article on best cat food bowls and hope you find a cat cave. I actually got one of these for my cat a few months ago, and he loved it. However, the novelty wore off after a few weeks but I’m hoping he’ll use it again:)

  3. Excellent article about cat bowls. Our little feline friend uses stainless steel bowls in a raised stand.
I did notice that you recommended several raised bowls in which the frame tilted them. Is the tilt preferable to just being raised? Should we now invest in new feeding bowls because ours is not angeled even though it is raised? Our cat is a small, calico who is about 4 years old.

    1. Hi Richard, good to hear that you provide your cat with stainless steel food bowls in a tilted stand. The reason that tilted bowls are better is they simply get your cat to eat in a better posture. This helps prevent strain on the neck and improve digestion. No, you don’t need to buy new bowls as the ones you have are at least raised off the ground. You could always search on YouTube for videos on how to make raised and tilted pet food stands. However, if you’re not into DIY, maybe think about getting a stand that allows you to tilt cat food bowls.

  4. This is a must read for every cat owner must read because I have personally seen many cat owners not really paying attention to the utensil when it comes to feeding their cats…whatever utensil is handy they use that to feed their pets.

You have listed some key points when it comes to location of the cat bowl, its shape and size. Thanks for sharing the list of best Cat bowls with details, it does help.

    1. Hi Satz, thank you for your comment and glad you enjoyed this post:) Yes, it’s important to think about the type of utensil you use to feed your cat. Saucers are ok but they’re not designed to be used by a cat or kitten. It’s far better to invest a very small amount in purchasing a food bowl that’s made specifically for pets.
